The BAe 146-100 is the shortest-fuselage variant of British Aerospace's four-engine regional jet family, introduced in the early 1980s. Designed to operate from short, unpaved, or noise-sensitive airfields, it became notable for its exceptionally quiet operation thanks to its high-bypass turbofan engines mounted on a high wing. The aircraft entered service in 1983 and found favour with regional and commuter carriers, as well as some government and military operators. Its ability to use steep approaches and operate from challenging airports gave it a distinct niche in the market. The 146 family was later rebranded as the Avro RJ series in the 1990s with updated avionics and systems. While production has ended, a number of 146-100 aircraft remain in service worldwide with smaller operators and for special missions.
Notable operators
Air Wisconsin, Dan-Air, Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), and TNT Airways were among notable operators of the BAe 146-100.
