The Boeing 737 MAX 9 is the third variant in the 737 MAX family, stretched to accommodate up to 220 passengers in a single-class configuration. It competes directly with the Airbus A321neo, offering improved fuel efficiency over its predecessor, the 737-900ER, through the use of CFM LEAP-1B engines and aerodynamic winglets. The MAX 9 shares the same advanced LEAP-1B engines and split-tip scimitar winglets as other MAX variants, delivering approximately 14–20% better fuel efficiency compared to the previous generation 737-900ER. The aircraft is designed for medium- to long-haul single-aisle routes. The 737 MAX family was grounded worldwide from March 2019 to late 2020 following two fatal accidents linked to the MCAS flight control system. The MAX 9 attracted renewed scrutiny in January 2024 when a door plug blew out on an Alaska Airlines aircraft mid-flight, prompting a temporary operational pause and FAA investigation.

The Boeing 737 MAX is a series of narrow-body aircraft developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes as the fourth generation of the Boeing 737. It succeeds the Boeing 737 Next Generation and incorporates more efficient CFM International LEAP engines, aerodynamic improvements such as split-tip winglets, and structural modifications. The program was announced in August 2011, the first flight took place in January 2016, and the aircraft was certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in March 2017. The first delivery, a MAX 8, was made to Malindo Air in May 2017.
