The Antonov An-26 is a Soviet-designed twin-turboprop military and civil transport aircraft, developed as an improved derivative of the An-24 regional airliner. It was designed specifically to incorporate a distinctive rear-loading ramp and clamshell doors, greatly improving cargo-handling flexibility for both military logistics and civilian freight operations. First flown in 1969 and entering service in 1970, the An-26 was produced at the Kiev Mechanical Plant in the Soviet Union. It became widely used by Soviet military aviation and was exported extensively to Warsaw Pact nations, developing countries, and various state airlines throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Although no longer in production, the An-26 remains in active service with numerous military and cargo operators around the world. Its robust construction, ability to operate from unprepared airstrips, and reliable engines have contributed to its longevity, though the type has suffered a notable number of accidents over its decades of operation.
Notable operators
Operated extensively by Soviet/Russian military, Ukrainian Air Force, Cuban Aerogaviota, and numerous African and Asian state carriers and military forces.
