The Antonov An-140 is a twin-turboprop regional airliner developed by the Antonov Design Bureau of Ukraine as a modern successor to the Antonov An-24. Designed to operate from short, unprepared airstrips in hot-and-high conditions, it features a high-wing configuration, retractable tricycle landing gear, and is capable of operating in remote and austere environments.
The aircraft entered service in the late 1990s and was produced in Ukraine as well as under license in Iran by HESA (Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries) as the IrAn-140. It attracted limited commercial interest outside of Ukraine and Iran, with most operators being regional or state-affiliated carriers. Production numbers remained modest, and the type has seen a gradual decline in operational activity.
The An-140 was also adapted for military utility roles, including the An-140T freighter variant. Political and economic disruptions, including the conflict in Ukraine from 2014 onward, severely impacted production and support for the type.
Notable operators
Notably operated by Motor Sich Airlines (Ukraine) and Iran Air Tours, with the IrAn-140 variant flown by several Iranian regional carriers.
