The Antonov An-12 is a Soviet-designed four-engine turboprop transport aircraft developed in the late 1950s, broadly analogous to the American Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Designed primarily for military logistics, it features a high-wing configuration, rear-loading ramp, and robust landing gear enabling operations from unprepared airstrips. The An-12 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces and Aeroflot, and was subsequently exported widely to allied nations and civilian operators. It became a mainstay of Soviet military airlift and was used extensively in civilian cargo roles across the Soviet Union, Africa, and Asia. Although production ended in the 1970s, many An-12s remain in commercial freight service, particularly with smaller cargo carriers in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Central Asia. The aircraft's ruggedness and large payload capacity have contributed to its remarkable longevity.
Notable operators
Operated by Aeroflot historically, and by numerous smaller cargo carriers including Cavok Air, Veteran Avia, and various African and Central Asian freight operators.
