The Canadair Regional Jet 100, developed by Bombardier Aerospace, is a stretched derivative of the Canadair Challenger 600 business jet adapted for regional airline operations. It was the first purpose-adapted regional jet to enter widespread commercial service, transforming short-haul air travel in North America and Europe during the 1990s.
The CRJ100 typically seats 50 passengers in a single-class configuration and is powered by two General Electric CF34-3A1 turbofan engines. Its narrow fuselage and relatively small passenger cabin earned it the nickname 'the tube' among crews, but its efficiency and operating economics made it highly popular with regional carriers.
Production of the CRJ100 has ended, but many examples remain in service with regional operators worldwide. It was succeeded by the improved CRJ200, which used more fuel-efficient CF34-3B1 engines but was otherwise nearly identical in airframe design.
Notable operators
Major operators have included SkyWest Airlines, Air Canada Jazz, Comair, Atlantic Southeast Airlines, and numerous other regional carriers in North America and Europe.
