The Ilyushin Il-76 is a large, four-engine heavy transport aircraft developed by the Soviet Union's Ilyushin design bureau in the late 1960s. Originally designed to replace the Antonov An-12 turboprop, it was intended to carry heavy machinery and equipment to remote regions of Siberia and support military logistics. It made its first flight in 1971 and entered service with Aeroflot and Soviet military forces in the mid-1970s.
The Il-76 features a high-mounted swept wing, four turbofan engines, a pressurized fuselage with a rear-loading ramp, and robust landing gear designed for operations from unprepared airstrips. Its airframe is stressed for demanding conditions and has seen extensive use in both military and civilian freight roles around the world.
The type has been produced in numerous variants, including the modernized Il-76MD-90A with PS-90A-76 engines, and has served in humanitarian airlifts, fire-fighting, paratrooper drops, and commercial cargo operations. It remains in production in updated forms and continues to serve with dozens of military and civil operators globally.
