The Ilyushin IL-86 was the Soviet Union's first wide-body passenger jet, developed in response to growing demand for high-capacity domestic air travel. Designed by the Ilyushin design bureau, it entered service with Aeroflot in 1980 and became a symbol of Soviet aviation ambition during the late Cold War era.
The aircraft featured a distinctive double-deck boarding system in which passengers entered through lower-deck doors, stowed their own luggage in underdeck compartments, and then climbed stairs to the main cabin. This eliminated the need for conventional baggage handling and jetways at many Soviet airports.
Despite its size and capacity, the IL-86 suffered from relatively poor fuel efficiency and limited range, which restricted it primarily to domestic and short-haul international routes. It was eventually superseded by the longer-range IL-96, and all examples had been retired from commercial service by the 2010s.
Notable operators
Aeroflot was the primary operator, with smaller numbers flown by Vnukovo Airlines and other post-Soviet Russian carriers.
