The Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation was an elongated and re-engined development of the original L-749 Constellation, stretching the fuselage by approximately 5.6 metres to accommodate more passengers and cargo. Powered initially by Wright R-3350 radial engines, the Super Constellation entered service in 1951 and quickly became a mainstay of long-haul air travel during the 1950s.
The aircraft featured the iconic triple-lobed fuselage cross-section and distinctive triple-tail design that made all Constellations immediately recognisable. Various sub-variants, including the L-1049C, G, and H, introduced increasingly powerful engines and greater fuel capacity, extending the type's range considerably.
The Super Constellation served with numerous major international carriers as well as military operators, bridging the gap between early post-war piston airliners and the jet age. It was eventually retired from major airline service as jet aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 entered service in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Notable operators
Major operators included TWA, Eastern Air Lines, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, and Qantas, along with the United States Navy and Air Force.

- ›Later variants used Wright R-3350 Turbo-Compound engines, which recovered exhaust energy for additional thrust.
- ›The type set several transatlantic speed and distance records during the 1950s.
- ›Military variants included the WV-2 (EC-121) Warning Star, used for airborne early warning missions.
