The Tupolev Tu-154 is a Soviet-designed three-engine narrow-body jet airliner developed by the Tupolev design bureau in the 1960s. It entered service with Aeroflot in 1972 and became the backbone of Soviet and post-Soviet aviation for decades, serving routes across the USSR and internationally. Designed as a replacement for the Tu-104 and Il-18, the Tu-154 was engineered to operate from poorly surfaced or unprepared airstrips common across the Soviet Union, giving it robust undercarriage and high-lift devices. Several variants were produced, including the improved Tu-154M, which featured more fuel-efficient Soloviev D-30KU-154 engines. By the 2000s and 2010s, the type was progressively retired by most operators due to high fuel consumption, noise regulations, and aging airframes. A small number continued flying with state operators and military fleets into the 2020s, though commercial operations have largely ceased.
