Japan Asia Airways

Japan Asia Airways (JAA) was a Japanese regional airline established as a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Air Lines (JAL). It was created primarily to maintain commercial aviation links between Japan and Taiwan following Japan's normalization of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in 1972, which required JAL to cease direct operations to Taiwan. By operating under a separate brand and IATA code, JAA allowed Japan to preserve air service to Taipei while enabling JAL to continue flying to mainland Chinese destinations. The airline operated routes mainly between Japan and Taiwan's Chiang Kai-shek International Airport (now Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport). Japan Asia Airways ceased independent operations in 2008, when JAL restructured its international routes and reintegrated Taiwan services under the main JAL brand following regulatory changes that allowed Japanese carriers to serve both mainland China and Taiwan simultaneously.
