ATA Airlines, originally known as American Trans Air, was a major U.S. leisure and charter carrier headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1973, it grew to become one of the largest charter airlines in the United States before expanding into scheduled low-cost service in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The airline operated a significant military charter business under contracts with the U.S. Air Mobility Command, transporting troops and equipment around the world. ATA was also a prominent provider of vacation and leisure travel packages, serving destinations in Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean. ATA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2004 and again in April 2008, the second filing resulting in the airline ceasing all operations and liquidating its assets. The airline's collapse marked the end of one of America's longest-running charter carriers.
