Piedmont Airlines (1948-1989)

Piedmont Airlines was founded in 1948 and became one of the most prominent regional carriers in the southeastern United States. Operating initially out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the airline built a reputation for connecting smaller communities across the Carolinas, Virginia, and neighboring states, growing steadily over the following decades. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Piedmont expanded its route network and fleet, evolving from a small local service carrier into a significant domestic airline. The airline was known for its reliable service and community-focused identity, earning strong loyalty among passengers in the mid-Atlantic and southeastern regions. Following the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, Piedmont pursued aggressive expansion and eventually merged with USAir in 1989, effectively ending its independent identity. The Piedmont name was later revived by US Airways for a regional subsidiary, but the original carrier remains a celebrated chapter in American aviation history.
