VRG Linhas Aereas

VRG Linhas Aéreas is the legal successor entity to the original Varig, once Brazil's flagship carrier and one of Latin America's most prominent international airlines. The original Varig was founded in 1927 and operated for decades as Brazil's primary long-haul carrier before facing severe financial difficulties in the 2000s. In 2006, the operational assets of the bankrupt Varig were acquired by a new company called VRG Linhas Aéreas, which initially continued flying under the Varig brand. In 2007, Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes acquired VRG Linhas Aéreas, absorbing its routes and the Varig brand into the Gol group. Following the acquisition, VRG Linhas Aéreas effectively became a subsidiary of Gol, and the Varig brand was eventually phased out. The airline's IATA code RG and callsign VARIG are remnants of the storied original carrier's identity.
