Joint Base Andrews (ADW/KADW) is a major United States Air Force installation located in Prince George's County, Maryland, approximately 10 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. It serves as the home of the 89th Airlift Wing, which provides worldwide special air mission airlift, including transport for the President of the United States, Vice President, Cabinet members, and other senior government officials. The base is perhaps best known as the home of the two VC-25A aircraft (modified Boeing 747-200s) that carry the call sign 'Air Force One' when the President is aboard. It also hosts the Air Force District of Washington and numerous other military and government aviation units. Joint Base Andrews was formed in 2009 when Andrews Air Force Base merged with Naval Air Facility Washington under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, creating a joint military installation. Civilian access to the base is strictly controlled and it is not open to commercial passenger traffic.
