The base gained prominent international attention during the 1990s when U.S. forces used it extensively during and after the Gulf War, and it continued to serve as a key hub for American military operations in the region through the early 2000s. U.S. forces largely withdrew from the base in 2003 but Saudi military operations have continued. While it carries an IATA code suggesting limited civilian applicability, Prince Sultan Air Base is primarily a military installation and does not function as a commercial passenger airport.
