Dekai's Nop Goliat Airport is a small regional hub, and dining options here reflect that intimate, unhurried character. There's no sprawling food court or chain coffee kiosk in sight — instead, a modest warung-style canteen sits just off the main waiting area, serving straightforward Indonesian staples that taste remarkably honest after a long journey through the highlands. Arrive early if you can, because seating fills quickly before morning departures.
The real draw is the local flavor baked into even the simplest dishes. Look for papeda, the sago-starch porridge beloved across Papua, often paired with kuah kuning — a fragrant yellow fish broth made with turmeric, lemongrass, and local river catch. You'll also find nasi goreng and mie goreng prepared to order, alongside sweet black coffee brewed strong in the Papuan tradition. It's unpretentious, filling, and exactly what you need before a flight deeper into the interior.
Because options are limited and operating hours can be inconsistent, seasoned travelers heading through Dekai recommend carrying snacks purchased in town the night before. The small stalls near the terminal entrance occasionally sell pisang goreng — golden fried banana — and packaged biscuits, which make excellent in-flight companions on the short Twin Otter hops connecting Dekai to surrounding villages. Think of eating here less as a dining experience and more as a warm, genuine introduction to Papuan hospitality.
