It is intended to serve as a second major international airport for the National Capital Region (NCR), relieving congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. The airport is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, which won the concession bid in 2021. The project is being built in phases, with the first phase expected to handle tens of millions of passengers annually upon completion. As of the mid-2020s, the airport was still under construction and had not yet commenced commercial operations. It has been positioned as a key infrastructure project aimed at boosting economic development in the Yamuna Expressway corridor and the broader Uttar Pradesh region.

In its first phase, the airport has one runway and one passenger terminal with a capacity of 12 million passengers annually. The airport will increase this capacity to 30 million passengers annually in the upcoming years. The airport is intended to complement Indira Gandhi International Airport as part of the Delhi-NCR region's dual-airport system.
