The Essence of La Laguna Airport

La Laguna Airport is a tiny, single-terminal airstrip carved into the lush hillside of Guanaja — one of Honduras's most underrated Bay Islands. Don't arrive expecting a food court or a sit-down café, because GJA operates on island time and island scale. What you will find, however, is a reflection of the community itself: a small waiting area where locals and travelers mingle, and occasionally a vendor offering cold drinks, packaged snacks, or fresh coconut water to tide you over before or after your short regional flight.
The real dining revelation happens just outside the terminal, where the island's personality kicks in fast. Guanaja is famous for its seafood, and if you time your arrival or departure well, nearby waterfront spots in Bonacca (the island's main cay) serve up grilled snapper, conch soup, and coconut-based fish stews that are deeply rooted in Garífuna and Caribbean tradition. These flavors — smoky, bright with lime, rich with coconut milk — are unlike anything you'd find in mainland Honduras, and they're worth planning an extra hour around your flight schedule to experience.
Savvy travelers headed through GJA know to eat before they get to the airport, not after. Grab a plate of baleadas or rice and beans with stewed chicken from one of the casual comedores in Bonacca before heading to the airstrip. Wash it down with a cold Salva Vida beer or a fresh fruit refresco. The airport itself is more of a scenic pit stop than a culinary destination, but with a little advance planning, your last taste of Guanaja can absolutely be a memorable one.
