Construction was completed in 2016, but the airport did not begin commercial operations until February 2016, with scheduled service commencing in October 2017 after wind shear issues delayed the start of commercial flights. The airport replaced the island's sole previous connection to the outside world — a Royal Mail Ship — transforming access to this British Overseas Territory. Its opening marked a significant milestone for Saint Helena, which had previously been one of the most difficult inhabited islands to reach. Airlink, a South African regional carrier, operates the primary scheduled service connecting Saint Helena to Johannesburg, South Africa, with occasional stops at Windhoek, Namibia. The airport has also handled occasional charter and relief flights.
