Remote airstrip serving the Walerek region of Papua, Indonesia.
Location
Walerek, Indonesia
Walerek Airstrip is a small, remote aviation facility located in the Papua province of Indonesia, identified by the ICAO code WRJK. It serves as a critical access point for communities in the surrounding area, where road infrastructure is extremely limited or nonexistent.
Like many airstrips in Papua, Walerek primarily supports missionary aviation, humanitarian operations, and light general aviation rather than scheduled commercial services. Organizations such as Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) and similar operators have historically provided essential links between remote Papuan communities and larger urban centers.
The airstrip is basic in nature, lacking the facilities typical of larger regional or international airports. Its primary value is in providing life-sustaining connectivity to otherwise isolated villages.
Getting to & from
Ground transport options from the airstrip are extremely limited due to the remote and rugged terrain of Papua province.
