Remote Japanese island airstrip with strategic defense significance.
Location
Nishinoomote, Japan
Mageshima Airport is located on Mage Island, a small uninhabited island off the southern coast of Tanegashima in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The island is administratively part of Nishinoomote City. The airstrip was originally developed for civilian use but has seen very limited commercial activity.
The island gained significant attention when the Japanese government purchased Mage Island in 2019 for approximately 16 billion yen, with plans to develop it as a facility for U.S. military carrier landing practice (FCLP), relocating such training from Iwo Jima. This has made Mageshima a subject of considerable strategic and political discussion in Japan.
As of the most recent available information, the airport does not operate scheduled commercial passenger services. The island itself remains largely uninhabited, and any airport infrastructure is basic and oriented toward military or governmental use rather than civilian aviation.
