Sitia Airport is charmingly small, which means the dining scene is intimate rather than overwhelming. The single terminal has a modest café-bar near the departure gate where you can settle in with a Greek coffee — order a freddo cappuccino if you want to feel like a local — and a light bite before your flight. It's genuinely pleasant, with staff who seem to know half the passengers by name and a relaxed pace that feels entirely at odds with airport dining elsewhere in Europe.

The food leans sensibly into regional identity. You'll find tiropita and spanakopita kept warm behind the counter, along with toasted sandwiches using local graviera cheese, which is one of eastern Crete's proudest exports and carries a protected designation of origin. Occasionally you'll spot small pots of local honey or thyme-scented olives available to take away — ideal last-minute gifts if you forgot to shop in town. The portions are honest and the prices, given the captive audience, are surprisingly fair.

Because Sitia sees a relatively modest volume of traffic, the café rarely feels rushed, and lingering over a Mythos beer or a glass of local Cretan wine while watching the mountains through the terminal windows is a quietly lovely experience. Don't arrive expecting a food court with multiple outlets — there isn't one. But do arrive a little early, grab a window seat, and treat the wait as one final, unhurried taste of eastern Crete before the mainland or wherever home happens to be pulls you back.
