Thompson Pass Airport

Thompson Pass Airport, identified by the identifier K55, is a small general aviation airstrip located near Valdez, Alaska, in the United States. It sits in the rugged terrain of the Chugach Mountains near Thompson Pass, an area known for extreme weather, heavy snowfall, and challenging flying conditions. The airport primarily serves light general aviation traffic, including private pilots and operators supporting local activities such as heli-skiing, backcountry access, and resource operations in the Valdez-Cordova area. It is not served by commercial airlines and lacks the infrastructure associated with commercial passenger facilities. Due to its remote location and mountainous surroundings, operations at the airstrip require pilots to have a thorough understanding of mountain flying techniques and local weather patterns, which can change rapidly.
