Kar Airport is a small regional airstrip serving the remote communities of Papua New Guinea's vast interior, and dining here reflects that honest, unhurried character. Don't expect a gleaming food court or international chains — what you'll find instead is a modest terminal canteen where local staff prepare fresh, simple meals throughout the day. It's the kind of place where a warm smile comes with every plate, and the food genuinely tastes like someone's home kitchen rather than an airport kitchen.
The standout dishes lean heavily on Papua New Guinea's staple ingredients. Look for mumu-style root vegetables — taro, sweet potato, and cassava — slow-cooked to a satisfying softness, often served alongside rice and a portion of grilled or stewed chicken. Occasionally you'll find fresh-caught fish prepared in coconut milk, a regional preparation that rewards the adventurous eater. Local greens cooked with garlic and a splash of soy sauce round out most plates, and everything tends to be filling, affordable, and genuinely good.
Because Kar sees limited flight traffic, meal timing matters more here than at busier airports. The canteen typically operates in alignment with scheduled arrivals and departures, so if you're transiting mid-morning or early afternoon you're in the best position for a freshly prepared meal. Bring some local kina rather than counting on card payments, keep expectations relaxed, and lean into the experience — a quiet meal at Kar is one of those small, memorable moments that makes regional Papua New Guinea travel feel wonderfully authentic.
