Elefsis Air Base

Elefsis Air Base is a military and general aviation facility rather than a commercial passenger airport, which means the dining options you'd find at a typical international terminal simply don't exist here in any traditional sense. There are no public food courts, no airside cafés open to civilian travelers, and certainly no branded restaurant chains. If you're arriving or departing through LGEL on a charter or private flight, come prepared — ideally with a meal already behind you.

That said, the surrounding town of Elefsina more than makes up for the airside scarcity. Just minutes from the base, you'll find genuine Attic tavernas serving grilled octopus, slow-cooked lamb, and hearty bean soups that reflect the earthy, unfussy cooking of this part of Attica. The port-adjacent spots are especially worth seeking out — pull up a plastic chair, order a carafe of local white wine, and watch the industrial waterfront hum with life. It's an unexpectedly authentic slice of working-class Greek hospitality.

For those with a little more time before or after a flight, the road toward Athens along the coast opens up excellent options. Fresh seafood mezedes, grilled sardines, and taramosalata are staples you'll encounter at almost every stop. A short drive also brings you within reach of Piraeus, one of Greece's great eating destinations. Think of the lack of airside dining not as a gap but as an invitation to step outside and eat the way locals actually do — which, honestly, is the better deal anyway.
