Makarora Airstrip

Makarora Airstrip (ICAO: NZMW) is a small, uncontrolled general aviation airstrip located in the Makarora Valley of the Otago region in New Zealand's South Island. Situated near the confluence of the Makarora River and Lake Wanaka, it serves as a access point for the surrounding mountainous wilderness area. The airstrip is a basic grass facility primarily used by light aircraft for scenic flights, backcountry access, and occasional private operations. It is located within or adjacent to the Mount Aspiring National Park corridor, making it a useful landing point for trampers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts accessing remote terrain. There are no scheduled commercial airline services, terminal buildings, or ground transport infrastructure associated with the airstrip. Operations are subject to the challenging mountain weather conditions typical of the Southern Alps region.
