Offutt Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located just south of Omaha, Nebraska, near the city of Bellevue. It serves as the home of United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) and the 55th Wing, the Air Force's largest combat-coded wing. The base has a storied history, tracing its origins to Fort Crook, established in the late 19th century. It was at Offutt where the Boeing B-29 Superfortresses Enola Gay and Bockscar were modified before their historic missions in World War II. Offutt AFB is a military installation and not open to the general public for commercial aviation. It maintains active runways used exclusively for military operations, reconnaissance, and command-and-control missions.
