Plovdiv International Airport is a compact, single-terminal operation, and its dining scene reflects that modest scale — but don't let the size fool you. The airside café-bar run by a local catering partner serves up genuinely decent Bulgarian coffee, which means strong, dark, and unapologetically serious. Pair it with a banitsa, the flaky feta-filled pastry that Bulgarians treat as practically a food group, and you've already got a more authentic send-off than most European airports manage.

For something more substantial before a flight, the small restaurant area offers a rotating selection of warm dishes that lean into Bulgarian comfort food — think kavarma, a slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew served in a clay pot, and shopska salad piled high with crumbled sirene cheese. It's not fine dining, but the kitchen clearly has local instincts, and the portions are generous in that no-nonsense Balkan way that makes you feel genuinely looked after rather than just processed through a till.

The drinks side of things is worth mentioning too. Bulgarian wine has been quietly excellent for decades, and a glass of Mavrud — the boldly tannic red grape variety grown right in the Plovdiv region — is available at the bar and makes for a far more interesting pre-flight ritual than the usual duty-free gin. Mastika, the local anise-flavoured spirit, also pops up for the adventurous. The airport may be small, but it does a respectable job of sending you off tasting something genuinely of this place.
