Baekui-ri (G-228) Airfield

Let's be upfront with you: Baekui-ri Airfield, known officially as RK38, is a small general aviation and military-use strip in the Gososeong-ri area of Gangwon Province, and it operates with none of the commercial terminal infrastructure you'd find at a major hub. There are no formal restaurants, food courts, or airside dining concessions here. If you're passing through on a light aircraft or a small charter, pack your own provisions — you won't find a café waiting on the other side of the runway.

That said, the surrounding region more than compensates for what the airfield itself lacks. Gososeong-ri sits in the heart of coastal Gangwon, where the food culture is deeply rooted in the East Sea's bounty. Nearby eateries — just a short drive from the field — serve exceptional haemul sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew loaded with fresh seafood), grilled ganjang gejang (soy-marinated raw crab), and steaming bowls of ojingeo sundae made with local squid. These are flavors that belong specifically to this stretch of coastline.

The closest substantial dining is found heading toward Goseong town proper or down along Route 7 toward Sokcho, where small, family-run restaurants line the road with handwritten menus and seafood tanks out front. Daepohang fish market in Sokcho, roughly 30 minutes south, is a pilgrimage worth making — raw urchin scooped straight from the shell, live abalone, and freshly smoked pollack are the kind of meals that stick with you long after the flight home.
