It was constructed to supplement and eventually partially replace the aging Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU), helping the city handle rapidly growing passenger and cargo demand. The airport opened in June 2021 and is one of the largest airports in China by planned capacity, designed to serve tens of millions of passengers annually. It serves as a hub for multiple Chinese carriers and supports Chengdu's ambitions as a major aviation hub connecting western China to domestic and international destinations.
