Remote airstrip serving the Kihansi hydropower and conservation zone.
Location
Kihansi, Tanzania
Kihansi Airport is a small, remote airstrip located near the Kihansi River gorge in the Udzungwa Mountains region of Tanzania. It primarily serves access needs related to the Kihansi hydropower project and the surrounding conservation area, rather than functioning as a commercial passenger facility.
The airstrip is not served by scheduled commercial airline services and lacks the infrastructure typical of a public airport. It is used mainly for charter flights, utility operations, and access by personnel involved in energy and environmental projects in the area.
Kihansi is notably associated with the Kihansi spray toad conservation efforts, a critically endangered species whose habitat was affected by the hydropower dam. The airstrip supports logistical needs for ongoing scientific and engineering work in this ecologically sensitive zone.
