It served as Bangalore's primary commercial airport for decades before the opening of Kempegowda International Airport in 2008, after which scheduled commercial passenger services were transferred. The airfield is closely associated with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India's state-owned aerospace and defence manufacturer, whose sprawling facilities adjoin the airport. It continues to be used for HAL's flight testing, military aviation activities, and general aviation operations. HAL Airport has played a significant role in India's aerospace development, serving as a base for test flights of indigenously developed aircraft, including the Tejas light combat aircraft and the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv.
