The Essence of Wanaka Airport

Wanaka Airport is a small, scenic regional airport that serves primarily general aviation and charter flights, so don't expect the sprawling food courts you'd find at Queenstown or Auckland. The terminal is compact and charming, reflecting the relaxed, outdoorsy spirit of the town itself. Airside dining options are minimal — a modest café counter handles most needs, offering freshly brewed coffee, cabinet food like filled rolls and slices, and bottled drinks for travellers passing through on light aircraft or scenic flight tours.
What the airport lacks in culinary ambition it more than makes up for in quality basics. The café typically stocks locally sourced pastries and snacks that reflect the Central Otago region's larder — think golden croissants, hearty savoury pies, and robust flat whites made with beans roasted by one of the South Island's respected independent roasters. It's the kind of honest, unpretentious food that actually suits the setting perfectly: you're here to fly over glaciers and lake vistas, not linger over a tasting menu.
Savvy travellers plan ahead and grab a proper meal in Wanaka town before heading to the airport. The short drive into the village centre puts you within reach of excellent options — lakeside cafés, bakeries turning out legendary sausage rolls, and spots serving Central Otago pinot noir alongside local lamb dishes. If you're arriving rather than departing, resist the urge to rush and instead let Wanaka's vibrant food scene be your very first reward for making the journey.

The airport is located beside State Highway 6, on a plateau above the small village of Luggate, and is 10 km south-east of Wānaka township. It was originally a private airstrip owned by Tim Wallis, but in 1985 it became the main commercial airport for Wānaka, replacing Mount Iron Aerodrome.
