Zhukovsky International Airport (IATA: ZIA, ICAO: UUBW) is located in Zhukovsky, approximately 40 kilometres southeast of central Moscow. It opened for commercial passenger operations in 2016, making it the newest and fourth international airport serving the Moscow metropolitan area, alongside Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo. The airport is built adjacent to the Gromov Flight Research Institute, one of Russia's most historic aviation test centers, and shares its runway infrastructure with ongoing aerospace research and development activities. The facility was developed in part to relieve congestion at Moscow's other major airports and to serve as a venue for the MAKS International Aviation and Space Salon, a major biennial air show held at the site. Zhukovsky has seen relatively modest passenger traffic compared to Moscow's other international airports, with charter and low-cost carriers forming a significant portion of its operations. Its long runway, one of the longest in Russia, is capable of handling heavy widebody aircraft.
