Inhambane's food scene is quietly extraordinary — rooted in the Indian Ocean and shaped by centuries of Swahili, Portuguese, and indigenous Tswa influence. Seafood dominates almost every meal worth eating here. Piri-piri prawns are the undisputed signature dish: fat, flame-kissed crustaceans marinated in fiery chilli oil, served with xima, the dense maize porridge that anchors southern Mozambican cooking. Order them anywhere near the waterfront and you'll understand immediately why this stretch of coast has a devoted culinary following.
The municipal market on Avenida da Independência is where local life and local flavor collide. Vendors ladle out matapa — a slow-cooked stew of cassava leaves, ground peanuts, and coconut milk that tastes like nothing else on earth — from enormous blackened pots. Grilled crab, fresh mango, and homemade cashew wine crowd the stalls alongside piles of dried fish that perfume the whole block. Go hungry, go early, and don't be precious about plastic stools. This is the most honest meal you'll find in the city.
For a sit-down experience, Tia Maria's near the dhow harbor remains a perennial favorite — a family-run spot where the catch arrives by boat and ends up on your plate within hours. The grilled kingfish with lime and garlic butter is exceptional. Restaurante Miramar offers cold Mozambican 2M beer and sweeping bay views alongside reliably good calamari. Street grills set up along the esplanade at dusk sell skewered chicken and spiced corn — casual, cheap, and absolutely worth joining the queue for.
