Papua New Guinea operates in a fundamentally different register. The accommodation base is thin, uneven in quality, and heavily weighted toward properties serving business travelers, NGO workers, aid organization staff, and specialist tourists such as divers and trekkers. Port Moresby has a small cluster of international-standard hotels and guesthouses, but outside the capital — in Lae, Madang, Alotau, or the Highland towns — options shrink rapidly and quality standards vary enormously. Mission guesthouses and community lodges fill gaps in rural and remote areas and represent some of the most authentic lodging in the country.
