The Falkland Islands accommodation scene is compact, intimate, and shaped almost entirely by the islands' small permanent population (around 3,500 people), geographic isolation, and wildlife-driven tourism. Stanley, the only settlement of any size, holds the majority of guesthouses, self-catering cottages, and small hotels. Options are few in number but generally well-maintained and personally run — you are far more likely to sleep in a family-operated guesthouse than a corporate hotel chain.

Outside Stanley, the 'Camp' — the local term for all land beyond the capital — offers farm stays and self-catering lodges that are among the most distinctive accommodation experiences in the South Atlantic. Working sheep farms that also take guests are a genuine tradition here, not a curated rural tourism product. Outer island lodges, particularly on Sea Lion Island and Bleaker Island, cater specifically to wildlife watchers and are the closest thing to a remote eco-lodge that the islands offer.

The overall supply of beds is genuinely small. During peak wildlife and cruise season (October to March) the islands see strong demand, and with no large hotel chains present, accommodation books up quickly. Visitors should treat this as a destination where planning months ahead is not optional but necessary, and where the experience of staying with local families or on working farms is a core part of understanding the place.

Peak season (October–March) coincides with the austral summer, optimal wildlife viewing (penguin breeding, seal pupping), and the arrival of cruise ships. This is when almost all visitors come, and the islands' limited bed count means accommodation can sell out entirely, particularly on outer islands and popular farm stays.

Shoulder season (April, September) sees fewer visitors and some availability, but some outer island properties close. Weather is more unpredictable.

Low season (May–August) is austral winter — most outer island lodges and many farm stays are closed. Stanley guesthouses generally remain open. Very few tourists visit.

Booking lead time: For outer island lodges (Sea Lion Island especially), book 6–12 months ahead for summer travel. Stanley guesthouses: 3–6 months ahead in peak season is prudent. Do not rely on walk-in availability during October–February. The islands' total visitor bed capacity is small relative to cruise ship passenger volumes, and cruise passengers typically do not overnight, but they do impact day services.

• Very limited total bed stock. The entire islands have only a few hundred visitor beds; do not assume last-minute availability will exist in peak season.
• Outer island transport is weather-dependent. FIGAS (Falkland Islands Government Air Service) small aircraft serve outer islands; flights can be delayed or cancelled. Budget flexible days into any outer island itinerary.
• Many properties are family-run and small. Expect personal, informal service rather than hotel-standard amenities. Confirm what meals, if any, are included.
• Self-catering cottages may require you to bring some provisions. Confirm grocery access or whether supplies are provided, especially outside Stanley.
• Card payment is not universal. Carry FKP cash or confirm payment methods before arrival, particularly in Camp and on outer islands.
• No elevator/lift infrastructure in most properties — the islands have almost no multi-storey accommodation buildings.
• Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity are limited outside Stanley; outer island properties often have satellite connectivity only.
• Seasonal closures are real: many Camp and outer island properties shut between May and August.

The Falkland Islands' small tourism sector means most accommodation is booked directly with property owners by email, or through a small number of local tour operators (such as Falkland Islands Tourism or specialist wildlife tour companies). Major OTAs have very limited coverage of the islands. Because direct email booking is common, confirm every reservation in writing and retain correspondence. Be cautious of any party asking for bank transfers to accounts outside the UK/Falklands banking system. Request a written confirmation with the property's official contact details. If using a tour operator to bundle accommodation and flights, verify they are established and that payment goes through traceable channels.

Stanley is small and walkable — most guesthouses within town are within 15–20 minutes' walk of the waterfront, museum, and main services. No public bus system operates. Taxis are available in Stanley and should be booked in advance for airport transfers from Mount Pleasant Airport (MPA), which is approximately 35–40 miles from Stanley — a significant road distance on mostly unpaved terrain.

Beyond Stanley, personal 4WD vehicles or hired Land Rovers are the standard means of reaching Camp farm stays on East Falkland. Road conditions vary dramatically by season and weather. Outer islands are reached by FIGAS light aircraft; some islands are also accessible by private boat arrangement. Accommodation location is therefore inseparable from transport planning — factor in vehicle hire or organised transfers when booking any property outside Stanley.

Families are genuinely welcomed in Falkland Islands accommodation, particularly in guesthouses and farm stays where a family atmosphere is the norm. Farm stays offer children direct exposure to working agriculture and wildlife in a supervised, uncrowded setting. Self-catering cottages in Stanley provide practical space for families with young children. Outer island wildlife lodges can be suitable for older children interested in nature but require tolerance for isolation and weather-related delays. Cots and extra bedding availability varies — confirm with each property directly. There are no large resorts or child-specific facilities anywhere on the islands.

Long-stay options are limited and not formally marketed as such. Some Stanley guesthouses and self-catering cottages will negotiate weekly or monthly rates for contractors, researchers, or military personnel — a significant segment of long-stay visitors given the British military presence at MPA. If staying for more than a week, contact properties directly to discuss terms. There are no branded aparthotels or serviced apartment complexes. Rental of private houses through local networks (often word-of-mouth or via the Falkland Islands Government) is how longer-term visitors typically arrange accommodation outside the standard guesthouse circuit.
