Many are set in ancestral Kerala homes — tiled roofs, wooden interiors, courtyard gardens — where owners live on-site and meals are home-cooked. This is a region where the homestay ecosystem is mature and regulated; the Kerala Tourism Department certifies many operators, which provides some baseline quality assurance. Heritage bungalows, converted rice granaries, and colonial-era planter's homes also appear, mostly in the mid-range to upscale tier.

Large international hotel brands are largely absent from the deep backwater villages; the luxury offer here comes instead from boutique lake resorts and upmarket houseboat fleets, several of which are nationally recognised. Budget travelers are well served in Alleppey town itself, where hostels and cheap guesthouses cluster near the boat jetties.
