The accommodation scene is distinctly small-town and nature-oriented rather than urban: you will find traditional ryokan, family-run minshuku, a handful of business hotels near the stations, and increasingly a modest selection of guesthouses and small hostels catering to hikers, pilgrimage walkers (the Chichibu 34-temple Kannon pilgrimage is a living tradition), and weekend escapees from Tokyo. Large chain hotels are sparse; independents dominate.

The surrounding valley and upland areas — including Nagatoro along the Arakawa River, and the quieter Okuchichibu backcountry — add texture to what's available: riverside inns, mountain lodges (sanso), and a small number of glamping and outdoor accommodation operators have grown alongside increasing eco-tourism interest. Minshuku here typically include dinner and breakfast (two-meal plans are common and sometimes required), giving stays a strongly local, home-cooked character that distinguishes them from generic business travel lodging.

Overall supply is limited relative to peak demand. During the Chichibu Night Festival (Yomatsuri, early December), cherry blossom season, and autumn color peaks, accommodation across the entire valley fills quickly. Travelers expecting Tokyo-level choice and last-minute availability will need to recalibrate expectations — forward planning is genuinely important here.

Chichibu Night Festival (Yomatsuri) — early December: One of Japan's three great float festivals; this is by far the hardest booking window of the year. Accommodation within the city and surrounding valley can sell out months in advance. If you intend to attend, book as soon as dates are announced — same-week or even same-month booking is generally not realistic.

Cherry Blossom Season (late March–mid April): Hitsujiyama Park's shibazakura (moss phlox, peaking late April–early May) drives enormous day-tripper and overnight demand. The week around Golden Week (late April–early May) compounds this. Book 2–3 months ahead minimum.

If you plan to stay at a mountain lodge, farm stay, or rural minshuku, check bus timetables carefully — services thin out in the evening and on some routes run only a few times daily. Many ryokan in Nagatoro and the wider valley offer free pick-up from the nearest station if you call ahead, which is worth requesting.

Chichibu is a workable family destination, particularly for families with older children interested in nature, hiking, and Japanese cultural experiences. Minshuku with 2-meal plans can be good value for families since children's rates are often available, and home-cooked communal dinners give a real cultural dimension. Families should confirm in advance whether futon-style rooms can accommodate their group size — traditional rooms are often configured for specific numbers and adding extra guests matters. The Nagatoro area is well-suited to families for its river activities (boat rides, canoeing). Large international-style hotels with connecting rooms, cribs, or Western-style beds are essentially absent from Chichibu; managing expectations about traditional sleeping arrangements is important. Some ryokan have a minimum age for use of communal baths.

Chichibu does not have a developed serviced-apartment or aparthotel sector in the Tokyo/Osaka sense. Options for stays longer than a week are limited. A small number of vacation rental properties (listed on Airbnb and occasionally on local platforms) can be rented for weekly or semi-weekly periods and may represent the most practical solution for longer visits. Some guesthouses catering to pilgrimage walkers or remote workers have emerged and may offer informal weekly rates — this requires direct negotiation with the property. For genuinely long-term stays (monthly), the Chichibu area has a small but growing community of migrants from Tokyo; local real-estate agencies and the regional akiya (vacant house) programs are more relevant than accommodation platforms for that timescale.
