Lithuania's accommodation landscape is more varied than its size suggests. Vilnius anchors the offer with a strong range from socialist-era renovated hotels and sleek boutique properties in the baroque Old Town to well-run hostels in Užupis and budget guesthouses just outside the centre. The country's second city, Kaunas, has seen genuine hospitality investment since its stint as a European Capital of Culture, with independent design hotels now sitting alongside Soviet-era stalwarts that have been modernised to varying degrees.

Beyond the cities, Lithuania's rural and coastal accommodation is genuinely distinctive. The Aukštaitija and Žemaitija national park regions host family-run farmsteads (kaimo turizmo sodyba — rural tourism homesteads) that are a well-established local institution, offering self-catering cottages, home-cooked meals, rowing boats, and sauna evenings on lakesides. These are not manufactured; the kaimo turizmo network has existed for decades and is a legitimate way to experience Lithuanian countryside life. The Curonian Spit, a UNESCO-listed sand-dune peninsula shared with Russia's Kaliningrad, adds a genuinely rare geography, with wooden guesthouses and small hotels in Nida and Juodkrantė operating seasonally.

The coastal resort of Palanga sees the country's most intense seasonal accommodation pressure, with prices spiking sharply in July and August. Across the country, English-language fluency among accommodation staff has improved substantially, but in very rural farmsteads, basic Lithuanian or Russian may smooth communication. All-inclusive resorts in the international sense do not feature here; the scene rewards independent travellers willing to book direct or through established OTAs.

Summer (June–August) is peak season nationwide. Palanga and the Curonian Spit (Nida, Juodkrantė) see the most acute pressure — Nida in particular has limited accommodation and should be booked 2–3 months in advance for July/August. Vilnius and Kaunas require 4–6 weeks lead time in summer; last-minute availability exists but choice narrows.

Vilnius Airport is close to the city — roughly 5–7 km from the Old Town — and accessible by public bus or taxi; staying centrally is not a handicap for airport access.

Kaunas is similarly navigable by public transport from central accommodation. Outside the cities, a car is strongly recommended. Rural farmsteads, the Aukštaitija lake district, and Žemaitija national park are not practically accessible by public transport. The Curonian Spit requires a ferry from Klaipėda (Smiltynė terminal); once on the spit, cycling is the dominant local transport and accommodation in Nida or Juodkrantė is effectively car-reduced. Kaunas has a smaller but growing short-term apartment rental market. EU citizens face no bureaucratic barriers to long stays; non-EU visitors should check visa and registration requirements for stays over 90 days. Coliving spaces have begun to emerge in Vilnius, catering to remote workers, though the sector is smaller than in Western European capitals. Grocery infrastructure in Vilnius and Kaunas is strong (Iki, Maxima, Rimi chains), making self-catering apartment stays practical.
