Travelers who come here are typically seeking sea fishing charters, east coast cycling routes, diving off the rocky coastline, or a genuine slice of Amis Indigenous culture rather than hotel amenities.

The dominant accommodation type is the family-run homestay (民宿, mínsù), which is deeply embedded in eastern Taiwan's travel culture. Many homestay operators are fishing families or Amis community members who offer simple but characterful rooms, often with home-cooked breakfasts featuring local seafood and produce. Small guesthouses and budget hotels exist near the town center and harbor, but international hotel chains are entirely absent. Travelers accustomed to mid-range urban hotel standards should recalibrate expectations — the appeal here lies in authenticity, proximity to the harbor, and the slower pace of east coast life.

Around Chenggong's broader township, a handful of eco-oriented and farm-adjacent homestays operate in the hills and coastal villages, reflecting eastern Taiwan's growing agri-tourism scene. Accommodation infrastructure is limited, so advance booking — especially during the marlin season and summer weekends — is strongly advised. Chenggong is served by Taiwan Railways (TRA) at Chenggong Station, which sits on the Hualien–Taitung line and connects to Hualien to the north and Taitung City to the south. Staying near the town center is practical for those arriving by train. However, the township's most interesting accommodation — coastal homestays along Highway 11 and rural village properties — requires a scooter or rental car, which most independent travelers on Taiwan's east coast already arrange. Scooter rental is available in Taitung City and occasionally locally, but supply in Chenggong itself is limited; plan ahead. Cycling is feasible along Highway 11 for the fit and experienced, and some homestays cater specifically to cycling tourists on the popular east coast route. There is no useful local bus network for getting between accommodations and key sights; walking range is effectively limited to the town center and harbor.

Chenggong's family-run homestays are generally well-suited to family groups in terms of atmosphere and often offer multi-room bookings or larger family rooms. Whole-property vacation rental arrangements can sometimes be negotiated directly with homestay owners for larger groups. Families with children will find the fishing harbor genuinely engaging, and the east coast beaches, while rocky in many sections, offer safe exploration.
