Kep attracts visitors for its famous crab market, quiet beaches, national park hiking, and slower pace compared to Sihanoukville. Accommodation options are consequently modest in total number and unlikely to suit travelers seeking large resorts or extensive amenities. Booking ahead during peak dry-season months and Cambodian public holidays is advisable, as quality mid-range beds are limited.

Peak season runs November through April when dry-season weather draws the most visitors. Book mid-range and boutique properties 2–4 weeks ahead during this window, and further ahead for the Christmas–New Year period and Cambodian New Year (Khmer New Year, typically mid-April), when domestic tourism surges significantly.

Kep's Crab Festival (dates vary, typically around Khmer New Year or designated annually) brings added demand to an already limited stock of quality rooms — check the festival calendar and book early if your dates align.

Rental bicycles and e-bikes are available from some guesthouses and local shops and suit the relatively flat beach road. A rental scooter gives the most flexibility for reaching hillside properties and the national park. The town has no formal bus station; Kampot (approximately 25 km) is the nearest hub for onward transport, and many travelers combine the two destinations. Rabbit Island is accessed by small boats from the Kep boat dock — the last return boats typically leave the island in the mid-to-late afternoon, making it effectively an overnight destination if you stay there. There is no commercial airport in Kep; Phnom Penh International Airport is the nearest major gateway, roughly 170 km away.

Families generally do well in Kep's mid-range guesthouses and bungalow-style properties, which often have garden space and relaxed layouts suited to children. Rabbit Island bungalows can work for adventurous families with older children comfortable with basic conditions, but the lack of reliable electricity, medical facilities, and limited food variety makes it less suitable for families with very young children. The national park fringe properties offer space and greenery. Note that most properties have no children's programming or dedicated family facilities — the appeal is more free-range and nature-oriented. Larger family groups should consider villa rentals, though supply is limited; plan well ahead.

Some guesthouse owners are willing to negotiate weekly or monthly rates for longer stays, particularly in the wet season when occupancy is low — this is worth asking about directly and off-platform. A small number of villa and bungalow properties on the hillside accept longer-term arrangements informally. Kampot, 25 km away, has a more developed long-stay ecosystem with guesthouses and apartments targeting the digital-nomad and expat market; travelers planning stays of a month or more often base themselves in Kampot and visit Kep as a day or overnight trip.
