It retains the same fuselage cross-section and general airframe as its predecessor but substitutes Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306B turbofan engines for the original turboprops, substantially increasing performance and cruise speed. The aircraft entered service in the late 1990s and was aimed at regional airlines seeking a modern, economical jet for short-haul routes. It typically seats around 32 passengers in a two-abreast configuration, making it suitable for thin regional routes. Production ended following Fairchild Dornier's bankruptcy in 2002, leaving a relatively small number of airframes in service worldwide.
