The Essence of F. D. Roosevelt Airport

F. D. Roosevelt Airport is a small, intimate gateway, and its dining scene reflects that charm rather than fighting it. Don't expect a sprawling food court — what you'll find instead is a handful of refreshment spots that punch above their weight. The airport's single terminal keeps things simple, with a compact café-style counter near the departure gates serving freshly made sandwiches, strong Dutch-style coffee, and cold local Amstel Bright beer that tastes like a reward after navigating a tiny but beloved island.
The real highlight for curious eaters is the presence of Statian-inflected snacks that you won't easily find once you leave the island behind. Keep an eye out for johnnycakes — those satisfying fried dough rounds — alongside saltfish preparations and sweet plantain bites that occasionally rotate through the small kitchen's offerings. It's the kind of food that makes you wish your layover were longer, or at the very least convinces you to pocket a few extra napkins and linger over your tray a little more deliberately.
Because the airport is genuinely tiny, the best strategy is to eat a proper meal in Oranjestad or at your hotel before heading to the terminal, then treat the airside options as a pleasant encore rather than a main event. That said, the staff behind the counter tend to be warm and unhurried, which transforms even a simple cup of coffee and a slice of cake into something that feels unmistakably Caribbean. Think of it less as airport dining and more as one last slow conversation with St. Eustatius before you fly away.
