El Calafate's airport is small but surprisingly thoughtful when it comes to feeding hungry travelers. The main terminal — really the only terminal — has a central café and snack bar that pulls double duty as the primary dining spot before and after security. It's nothing fancy, but the coffee is genuinely good, the facturas (Argentine pastries) are fresh in the morning, and the empanadas hold their own. Given how early flights to Buenos Aires tend to depart, that hot café con leche becomes something close to sacred.
The standout local specialty to look for airside is Patagonian lamb, and you'll often find it tucked into sandwiches or hearty hot plates at the main counter. It's the same grass-fed cordero that defines the region's estancia cooking, slow and rich with a depth that reminds you exactly where you are. Some vendors also carry smoked trout from nearby lakes, either in sandwiches or as part of a small charcuterie-style plate. These aren't gimmicks — they're genuinely local products that make the wait feel like a last taste of the region.
Beyond the main café, a small retail area sells packaged regional goods — dulce de calafate (the wild berry jam the town is named for), local chocolates, and bottled preserves — which double nicely as edible souvenirs if you forgot to shop in town. The selection is modest but curated, and the jam in particular is worth grabbing. Honestly, the airport dining won't compete with El Calafate's excellent town restaurants, but it wraps up the trip on an authentically Patagonian note, which is exactly what you want before boarding.
