It sits approximately 50 kilometres from the Greenland Ice Sheet, making it a key departure point for scientific expeditions and eco-tourism. The airport is built on the site of the former Sondrestrom Air Base, which was operated by the United States Air Force during and after World War II and returned to Danish and Greenlandic control in 1992. Its long runway, originally constructed for military purposes, is well suited to large jet aircraft and remains the longest runway in Greenland. Kangerlussuaq serves as a transit hub where international flights connect to smaller Greenlandic towns via domestic carriers. The surrounding area attracts visitors for dog sledding, musk ox safaris, and aurora borealis viewing, though the town of Kangerlussuaq itself has a very small permanent population.
