Khor Fakkan is a port city and enclave of the emirate of Sharjah, situated on the UAE's east coast facing the Gulf of Oman rather than the Arabian Gulf. Its name is commonly translated as 'Creek of the Two Jaws', a reference to the natural bay that shelters its shoreline. Unlike the more urban centres of Dubai or Sharjah city, Khor Fakkan retains a relaxed, small-town character while offering genuinely clear water and accessible coral reefs.

The city sits roughly midway along the east coast between Fujairah in the south and the Musandam border in the north. The Hajar Mountains form a dramatic backdrop, making the coastal scenery more varied than anywhere on the western (Arabian Gulf) side of the UAE. Because it is an exclave of Sharjah — separated from the main emirate by the territory of Fujairah and Dubai — it has a distinct, quieter identity.

Khor Fakkan has historically been an important trading harbour and is still home to one of the region's largest container ports, which operates alongside the town's fishing and tourism activities. Travellers come primarily for the beaches, water sports, diving, and as a base for exploring the surrounding mountains and wadis.

By Road from Dubai or Sharjah City

From Sharjah city the journey is similar in duration. Road conditions are generally good; mountain passes are well maintained.

By Road from Fujairah

Fujairah city is the nearest major urban centre, approximately 25–30 km to the south along the coastal E99. Taxis and private vehicles make this a short and straightforward transfer.

Nearest Airports

Fujairah International Airport is the closest airport (verify current routes and schedules directly with airlines and the airport, as services change). Dubai International Airport and Sharjah International Airport are larger hubs with far more flight options; both are roughly 1.5–2 hours by road.

No Rail or Ferry

There is currently no passenger rail or scheduled ferry service connecting Khor Fakkan to other cities.

Khor Fakkan is compact enough that the central beach area, Corniche, and many amenities are walkable from accommodations near the waterfront. However, the broader area — including mountain viewpoints and nearby wadis — requires a vehicle.

Taxis are available locally; agree on a fare or confirm metered rates before travel. Ride-hailing apps (Careem and Uber both operate in the UAE) function in Khor Fakkan, though availability may be less consistent than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi — verify locally.

Renting a car from Fujairah or Dubai is a practical option for visitors who want flexibility to explore the coast and the Hajar Mountains. A standard sedan is sufficient for most roads; a 4WD is advisable if you plan to explore unpaved wadi tracks.

Snorkelling and Diving

Khor Fakkan's main draw is its underwater environment. The bay and surrounding coastline offer relatively accessible coral reef systems with good visibility by regional standards. Several dive centres operate locally and offer equipment rental, guided dives, and courses — verify current operators and pricing on arrival or through Sharjah Tourism channels.

Khor Fakkan Beach (Al Montazah)

The main public beach stretches along the Corniche and is well maintained. Swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking are popular. Amenities including shaded seating areas and food kiosks are available, though hours and facilities should be confirmed locally.

Rifaisa Dam and the Hajar Mountains

A short drive inland through the mountains leads to viewpoints and the Rifaisa Dam reservoir area, which is particularly scenic after winter rainfall. The winding mountain road itself is considered a highlight by many visitors.

Al Ittihad Square and the Corniche

The Corniche is the social heart of the city — a pleasant waterfront promenade suitable for an early morning or evening walk. Al Ittihad Square nearby has public art and a focal point for the local community.

Shark Island (Jazīrat al-Ghurab)

Mountain and wadi driving carries risks if roads are unfamiliar. Flash flooding in wadis can occur rapidly after rain, even if you cannot see rain where you are standing — move to higher ground immediately if water levels begin to rise.

Khor Fakkan falls under the governance of Sharjah, which has a notably conservative cultural character compared to neighbouring Dubai. Sharjah officially bans the sale of alcohol throughout the emirate, including in Khor Fakkan.

Islam is the official religion and shapes daily rhythms — prayer calls occur five times daily and many businesses briefly pause during prayer times. Visitors are welcome at the exteriors of mosques but should check whether any mosques in the area permit non-Muslim visitors inside, and dress modestly if entering.

The population is a mix of UAE nationals (Emiratis) and a large expatriate community, predominantly from South Asia. Emiratis you encounter in public life will generally be hospitable; a respectful greeting ('As-salamu alaykum') is appreciated though not expected from tourists.

Photography etiquette: always ask before photographing individuals, particularly women. Avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, and the container port.
