Overview
Le Lavandou is a small coastal town on the Var coastline of the French Riviera, situated roughly between Hyères and Saint-Tropez in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Despite sitting on one of France's most glamorous coastlines, it has retained a quieter, more genuinely local atmosphere than many of its better-known neighbours.
The municipality is made up of several distinct quartiers and beaches stretching along about 12 kilometres of coastline, including the central port area and smaller hamlets such as Aiguebelle, Saint-Clair, and Cavalière. Each has its own character, ranging from the activity of the main port to secluded pine-backed coves.

Getting There
By air
The nearest major airport is Toulon-Hyères Airport (TLN), approximately 30 kilometres west of Le Lavandou. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE), about 110 kilometres east, offers a far wider range of international connections and is a common entry point for visitors to the region. Transfer from either airport is best arranged by rental car or taxi; verify current shuttle or bus links before departure.
By train
Le Lavandou does not have its own railway station. The closest TGV and regional rail stops are at Toulon and, on the coastal line, at Saint-Raphaël or Les Arcs-Draguignan. From those stations, onward travel requires a bus or taxi. Check SNCF (sncf.com) for current schedules and connections.
By bus

Driving is the most flexible option. From the A8 motorway, exit at Le Muy or Puget-sur-Argens and follow the D559 coastal road westward, or exit at Hyères for the approach from the west. Parking in and around Le Lavandou in July and August can be congested; arrive early or use park-and-ride options if available.
Getting Around
Le Lavandou's central area and port are walkable. However, the various beach quartiers are spread over several kilometres along the coast, so a car or bicycle is useful for exploring beyond the town centre.

Bicycle and scooter rental is available in town during the summer season — confirm current operators on arrival. The coastal road can be busy in high summer, so cycling requires care.

Îles d'Or day trips
The three Golden Islands are the area's standout excursion. Porquerolles is the largest and most visited, known for its sandy beaches, pine forests, and cycle paths. Port-Cros is a national park island with no cars and excellent snorkelling and diving in protected waters. Île du Levant is mostly a French naval zone, with a small civilian section. Diving and water sports
Le Lavandou and the surrounding waters — particularly around Port-Cros — are regarded as among the best diving destinations on the French Mediterranean coast. Massif des Maures
The forested hills of the Massif des Maures begin immediately behind Le Lavandou and offer hiking and cycling routes. The GR51 long-distance trail passes through the area. The village of Bormes-les-Mimosas, just inland, is a well-preserved hilltop Provençal village worth a half-day visit.

Safety
Le Lavandou is a safe destination by general standards. Petty theft — particularly of items left unattended on beaches or in parked cars — is the most common concern in summer. Do not leave valuables visible in vehicles.
Sea conditions in the Îles d'Or crossing and around rocky coves can change quickly. Follow guidance from ferry operators and observe any posted swimming flags on beaches; red flags indicate dangerous conditions and swimming is prohibited.

Local Culture & Etiquette
Le Lavandou has a distinctly southern French character — unhurried, oriented toward the outdoors and the sea, and shaped by its working harbour roots. The town is considerably less formal and ostentatious than Saint-Tropez to the east.
Basic French is appreciated and goes a long way in smaller establishments and markets. English is spoken in most tourist-facing businesses in summer, but less reliably outside that period. Learning a few phrases — greetings, ordering food, asking for directions — is both practical and well-received.
Lunch remains the main meal of the day for many locals. Many shops and some businesses close for a midday break, typically between around noon and 2 or 3 pm, though this varies. Restaurants serving dinner often do not open before 7 or 7:30 pm.
The town celebrates several local festivals and events across the summer season, including music events and the Fête de la Saint-Pierre, traditionally honouring the patron saint of fishermen. Verify current event dates with the tourist office.
