Overview
Ellinikó is a southern suburb of Athens in the Attica region, situated roughly 10 kilometres from the city centre and close to the Saronic Gulf coastline. With a population of around 16,700, it functions primarily as a quiet residential district that benefits from good metro connectivity and proximity to the sea.
The suburb is best known internationally as the site of the old Ellinikon International Airport, which closed in 2001 when Athens International Airport opened at Spata. For more than two decades the vast former airfield sat largely idle, becoming one of Europe's largest abandoned urban spaces. A large-scale redevelopment project — the Ellinikon Project — was approved and has been under way in phases, aiming to transform the site into a mixed-use district including parks, residences, hospitality, retail, and a marina extension. Construction timelines and open areas change frequently, so verify current public access and open sections locally or on the developer's official communications before visiting.
For travellers, Ellinikó is less a traditional sightseeing destination and more a functional, well-located base near the coast. It sits close to the coastal strip (the 'Athens Riviera') that stretches toward Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza, making it convenient for beach days combined with Athens city excursions.
Before You Go
Visas
Greece is a Schengen Area member state. Visa requirements vary significantly by nationality. Check TravelerPulse's Visas section and consult the official Greek immigration authority or your nearest Greek consulate well before travel.
When to Go
Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking and coastal activities. July and August are hot and humid in the greater Athens area; the coast provides some relief but can be crowded. Winters are mild by northern European standards but occasionally rainy.
Health and Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance including medical cover is strongly recommended. EU/EEA citizens should carry their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or equivalent. Non-EU visitors should verify their coverage before departure.
What to Pack
- Light, breathable clothing for summer; a layer for spring/autumn evenings
- Sunscreen and a hat — the Attica sun is intense from May onward
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Swimwear if you plan to use nearby beaches
Getting There
By Air
The nearest airport is Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' (ATH), located approximately 25–30 kilometres northeast in Spata. It is well connected to major European and international destinations. From the airport, the Metro Line 3 (blue line) runs directly to central Athens stations; from there you can connect onward toward Ellinikó.
By Metro
Ellinikó is served by the Elliniko station on Athens Metro Line 2 (red line), making it straightforward to reach from the city centre (Syntagma, Omonia). The metro is generally the fastest and most reliable option from Athens. Verify current timetables and fares with OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organisation) — oasa.gr.
By Road
Ellinikó is accessible via the coastal Poseidonos Avenue and by the suburban road network. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (e.g., Beat, Uber) operate in the greater Athens area. Driving from central Athens typically takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.
Getting Around
Within Ellinikó itself, most errands and local points of interest are walkable from the metro station. The suburb's grid is relatively flat and pedestrian-friendly.
For reaching the coast, the Glyfada seafront, or the wider Athens Riviera, local buses complement the metro. Taxis are plentiful and metered; confirm the meter is running at the start of your journey. Ride-hailing apps provide an alternative with upfront pricing.
Cycling infrastructure in the area is limited compared to northern European cities, though the coastal promenade toward Glyfada is bikeable. Rental options — verify locally for current availability.
Things to See & Do
The Ellinikon Redevelopment Site
The former airport grounds represent the suburb's defining landmark and point of curiosity. Portions of the site have opened to the public in phases — including a Metropolitan Park area — but access, open hours, and available facilities change as construction progresses. Check current status locally or via official project communications before planning a visit.
Athens Riviera Coast
Ellinikó sits at the northern edge of the Athens Riviera coastal strip. Glyfada, immediately adjacent, offers organised beach facilities, waterfront cafés, and a marina. Further south, Vouliagmeni Lake — a brackish thermal lake — and Cape Sounion with its Temple of Poseidon are within reasonable driving distance.
Day Trips to Athens
The Metro Line 2 puts Ellinikó within 20–30 minutes of central Athens, making the Acropolis, National Archaeological Museum, Plaka neighbourhood, and other major sights entirely practical as day trips.
Local Neighbourhood Life
Ellinikó has a lived-in, local character: kafeneions (traditional Greek coffee houses), neighbourhood tavernas, and small squares where you can observe everyday Athenian suburban life away from tourist crowds.
Food & Drink
Ellinikó's dining scene is oriented toward local residents rather than tourists, which generally means straightforward, honest Greek cooking at reasonable prices. The suburb has neighbourhood tavernas serving grilled meats, seafood, and mezedes, as well as bakeries (fournos) offering fresh bread, tyropita (cheese pie), and spanakopita.
For a broader choice of waterfront seafood restaurants and upscale dining, nearby Glyfada — walkable or a short taxi/bus ride away — has a more developed restaurant strip along its coastal avenue.
What to Try
- Mezedes: small dishes (olives, taramasalata, dolmades) shared at the table
- Grilled fish (psari): best ordered by weight at tavernas; ask to see the fish before ordering
- Greek coffee (ellinikos kafes): ordered as sketos (unsweetened), metrios (medium), or glykos (sweet)
- Frappe or freddo espresso/cappuccino: iced coffee is a Greek staple year-round
Specific restaurant recommendations change frequently; ask locally or check current reviews on established platforms before dining.
Practical Information
Money
ATMs are available in the suburb and widely distributed across greater Athens. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops, though smaller neighbourhood establishments may prefer cash. Verify before ordering.
Internet and SIM Cards
Greek and EU mobile data plans work normally. Tourist SIM cards are available at the airport and mobile network shops in Athens. Wi-Fi is standard in most accommodation.
Emergency Numbers
- European Emergency Number: 112
- Police: 100
- Ambulance: 166
- Fire: 199
Electricity
Greece uses the standard European two-pin plug (Type C/F), 230V/50Hz.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated but not rigidly expected. Rounding up the bill or leaving small change is common in cafés; 10% is a reasonable gesture in sit-down restaurants for good service.
Safety
Ellinikó is a calm residential suburb with a generally low crime profile typical of southern Athenian suburbs. Standard urban precautions apply: keep an eye on personal belongings in busy public spaces and on public transport, and avoid leaving valuables visible in parked vehicles.
The development activity around the former airport site means some areas have construction zones with restricted access; respect signage and barriers.
